What's with all of the extra gear on the archers bows?

I'm watching an electrifying archery match(?) between the US and France. It looks like there is a tripod hanging off of the archers bows. What is that about?

1. Balance I think

They can balance the bow to their specifications

2. Kind of like a bendable vaulting pole. Not really fair.

3. It's all about precision and balance, and the moment of release.

Or so I assume.

4. They are called stabilizers

They increase the mass and rotational inertia of the bow, so that it resists twisting and torquing during the draw, hold, and release. The bow becomes a more solid platform to provide consistency for the archers' shots.

7. The modern day bow looks like a Rube Goldberg machine

8. The cams reduce the weight of the draw from its peak weight

to that at the release point. I have a old compound bow; its draw weight is 65#, but it’s hold weight, at full draw, is 30#.
