In Sunday’s group competition, Russia didn’t win gold either, losing to Bulgaria.

Since authoritarian countries cherish Olympic competitions as a tool to inflame nationalist sentiments and promote their countries’ global standing, Russia’s defeats were loudly rejected by a host of pro-Kremlin voices—who resorted to state media’s time-honored tradition of conspiracy-mongering.

Experts on Russian state television have been trying to read each country’s Olympic gold medals as tea leaves, suggesting that the outcome determines the new global hegemon. Last week, pro-Kremlin pundits, hosts, and experts relished the idea of the “weakened” United States being edged out by China. The host of the state TV show 60 Minutes, Olga Skabeeva, pontificated: “You can’t beat China. They have the most gold medals.” Eager to inject Russia’s notorious transphobic rhetoric into the conversation, Skabeeva added: “And none of them are transgenders, so they will keep procreating."

To Russia’s dismay, the United States ultimately surpassed China, winning 39 gold medals and 113 medals overall—the most in the world. And that means, according to Russian state TV’s logic, that the U.S. is not relinquishing its global leadership—which does not sit well with Russia.

I'm always so happy for the medalists like the triple jumper from Burkina Faso, the Indian Javelin thrower, the Tunisian swimmer, etc. Not to mention the ones that just show up. After all, half of life is just showing up.

So many. I always root for our athletes but also for the small or underrepresented countries. The Egyptian pentathlon winner made me smile too, and there was an Egyptian woman who won a medal in one of the martial arts.

Some time back when my grandson was learning to thrown discus, I pointed him at the Indian thrower who taught himself via YouTube because he didn't have a coach.

weren't supposed to compete in the damned Olympics, but cried their way in. They were to wear neutral uniforms (they were anything BUT neutral) and not display any Russian flags ( that went by the wayside as well).

won the team rhythmic gymnastics *snicker* and an Israeli of Yemenite descent won the individual. That's the one where the Russian athlete (or maybe her coach) lodged a protest and she pouted and cried.

One thing I don't understand about rhythmic gymnastics as opposed to regular gymnastics is how they are allowed to make an "inquiry" about the score. It's like a protest. They can only inquire about the judges' score on the difficulty, not on the execution. Seems to me of that's allowed there it should be allowed in regular gymnastics, or shouldn't be allowed at all (I vote for the latter, it just takes up a lot of time and the judges don't change the score anyway_.

It's Russia of course, so that's inevitable. Besides, no country was very dominant in this Olympics to begin with. There were 93 countries that won medals, and it took the top 9 to win the majority of them.
