Pro women's field at US Nationals kneels in protest of Roe v. Wade decision

As the American national anthem rang out, most of the field on the start line of the women’s US Pro Criterium Championships dropped to one knee.

The act of protest came less than twelve hours after the US Supreme Court released its decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that guaranteed the right to legal abortion across the United States.

The protest was organized earlier in the day by competitors including L39ION’s Alexis Ryan. "Everyone in Knoxville, TN for the US National Championships, we’re organizing a moment of solidarity for the overturning of Roe v Wade this morning. Plan is to take a knee during the national anthem. Spread the word," Ryan wrote on her Instagram story about two hours before the race was set to begin. Ryan is the defending US Criterium champion.

Tennessee, which is hosting the national championships, is one of the many states in which the right to abortion is set to be abolished. It has a "trigger ban" in place that will take effect in 30 days.
