Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for widespread change at Hockey Canada as the national governing body for hockey remains embroiled in a sexual assault scandal.
Trudeau suggested that Hockey Canada could be abolished and replaced by another organization that would do a better job of protecting its citizens from the widespread abuse that has allegedly occurred at a systemic level.
This past summer, it was revealed that Hockey Canada had used the National Equity Fund to pay off sexual assault victims and on Monday, The Globe and Mail reported that Hockey Canada engineered a second fund, called the Participants Legacy Trust Fund, with the purpose of matters including, but not limited to sexual abuse.
There needs to be wholesale change," Trudeau said Thursday. "They need to realize that if we have to create an organization, get rid of Hockey Canada, and create an organization called 'Canada Hockey' instead, people will look at doing that."

The federal sport minister is ramping up her criticism of those leading Hockey Canada an organization accused of mishandling allegations of gang rapes by urging them to vacate their positions before the sports body is damaged beyond repair.
"I hope they understand the message and leave before they burn it to the ground," Pascale St-Onge said Thursday after a cabinet meeting on Parliament Hill.
Her comments are just the latest salvo aimed at the national ice hockey body.
CBC News has confirmed that Hockey Canada's board and its provincial members had a conference call scheduled for 5 p.m. ET. Thursday ahead of an in-person meeting set for Oct 15.

(11,917 posts)My grandson was chosen to play on a hockey development team, with AA certified coaches at age 9, only one age group as a trial for the province and could well go on to play Jr, if he keeps it up. I also have a granddaughter (12) who is playing tier 1 boys hockey this year. I worry for them both of them as they get older in this sport and especially if they continue on this high level path. I used to billet Jr A players and one of them told me a bit about the hazing he had to endure, as a new team member ( he just turned 17) but he would not tell me everything, saying it was just so gross. It was during a road trip and on the bus, coaches were on the bus with them. I was shocked to hear that the coaches allowed this shit, I do know if the owner found out they would have been gone, winning team or not. My billet made me promise not to repeat what he told me to the owner or his parents. He got a 4 year full scholarship to Boston College and is a very well balanced man now, with a family of his own but I do know he does not push his sons to play hockey.
