Heads up! Heritage volunteer struck by golf ball, visiting doctor happens to be nearby
Spectators regularly joke about it, but few actually expect to get hit by a stray ball while enjoying the action. Thats what happened Sunday at the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing tournament. Unfortunately for one unidentified Heritage volunteer, he suffered the most unlikely of injuries during Sundays final round. Golfers Correy Conners, Lee Hodges and Sahith Theegala were playing the Harbour Town Golf Links 9th hole around 2:15 p.m. Sunday afternoon. It wasnt clear which golfer was responsible, but one of the pros drives accidentally struck a tournament volunteer in the back of the head and sent him to the ground, bleeding from a from a small abrasion.
The volunteer walked off under his own power within minutes to receive treatment and waved to the stands at the 9th green. Play was not delayed, and fans applauded the man as he walked off. He was in good spirits, Whitler told The Island Packet. We said, Well, you might be able to get a signed ball.

I am the volunteer. You know how the crowd cheers when football player gets up again. I got those kind of cheers.
Also got a signed ball and the ball that hit me.

I was playing in a tournament in college. On the second nine, a double dogleg par 5 played along the edge of the practice range.
My ball was just off the fairway at the first turn. Some big strong lefty was hitting on the range and blocked one left. I'm standing waiting for the next threesome to hit the third shots when I hear "thump" then bang! The ball hit the ground maybe 20 feet from me and whacked me on the left cheekbone on the first bounce.
No cut, but it hurt like heck.
This was the 11th hole. By the time I was putting on 13, I was playing with one eye because the thing swelled up enough to shut the eye.
I was ok a couple days later.
So, I know the feeling.
