The Big Ten has suspended Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh for the remainder of the regular season as the league disciplines the program under its sportsmanship policy amid the ongoing NCAA investigation into the school's in-person sign-stealing ring.
The decision was announced Friday afternoon as the third-ranked Wolverines (9-0) head to No. 10 Penn State (8-1) for a critical road game Saturday.
Michigan was found to be in violation of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy for "conducting an impermissible, in-person scouting operation over multiple years, resulting in an unfair competitive advantage that compromised the integrity of competition," the conference said in a statement.
The Big Ten's punishment is institutional, not for Harbaugh, but the head coach is serving the penalty. His suspension only bans him from the sideline on game day, as he's allowed to coach the team the remainder of the week.

(7,962 posts)Jeez the Big 10 with all the horrific scandals at Penn State, Michigan State and Ohio State, is a cesspool.

(5,044 posts)You hand out a punishment before an official investigation is completed? Is that anywhere near the spirit of what we do in this country? I wouldn't think so, and that sets a dangerous precedent in my book.
It will be interesting to see if UM will seek an injunction, and if there's a judge somewhere who wants to weigh in.

(186,672 posts)Kornheiser said exactly what you did. If they file in Ann Arbor maybe but a judge could say - thats your private group (Big10) and I have no purview to your rules.
I am born Buckeye fan.
Football isnt usually run by masterminds. I agree with you and Tony, they better have something solid here.

(5,044 posts)This whole episode has been ridiculous from jump. Neither the conference, Michigan or the NCAA will look good when this is all over with. Jesus, what a farce.

(106,365 posts)Not criticizing the OP. Harbaugh's suspicion is a big deal and ultimately controversial.
Still, the football forum is nothing but NFL and so I thought there would be more college discussion here.
Well, the SEC championship is settled and will be UGA v Alabama in Atlanta. So, regardless of what happens with Michigan and the Big 10, that will be a great conference championship
