The Florida State Seminoles didn't know it at the time, but their chances of making the College Football Playoff went down when quarterback Jordan Travis suffered a season-ending left leg injury against North Alabama. In doing so, it marked the first time that an undefeated Power Five team missed the playoff.
Michigan (13-0) is the top seed, followed by Washington (13-0), Texas (12-1) and Alabama (12-1). The No. 5 Seminoles finished 13-0 and defeated Louisville in the ACC title game 16-6. Ultimately, the committee leaned on its criteria about key players being injured when considering the playoff teams.
After the news came down, Travis took to X, formerly Twitter, to express his heartbreak over he and his teammates being snubbed.
ACC commissioner Jim Phillips went a step further and called the decision to leave out Florida State "unfathomable."

(36,590 posts)I hate that FSU chant, but the team's record speaks for itself. They didn't win 13 games against high school teams.
There could be a 16 team playoff without extending the season, just drop the exhibition game that each team now plays.

(28,604 posts)For one thing, it shouldn't be connected to the remnants of the Bowl System. Alabama should be coming to Ann Arbor and the Big House. But there is never home field advantage. I know they are talking about doing it, but the highest seeds will have byes, so they won't get rewarded with home games, which is messed up.
I liked it way better before the BCS. Bowl season was flat out fun and you had 20+ happy teams. Now the stakes are too high and the northern teams all have to go south. My sister has been to a couple of Orange Bowls and she said she doesn't even feel as if she's at a college game, it's very corporate and there is so much hoopla.

(28,392 posts)Maybe Flo State would lose w/o their QB...so what? The entire team earned the spot. Record and schedule ought to dictate selection.

(5,044 posts)And yes, Florida State got screwed harder than Alabama would have had they not been selected. From a tv standpoint, though, ESPN got a better Rose Bowl match-up as a result. A year from now such shenanigans will no longer be an issue, even though I would have preferred adding two teams instead of tripling the field, but whatevs.
