I got her home! My new 2024 C8 Corvette is safe and sound! (pics)

Last edited Sat Oct 28, 2023, 05:02 AM - Edit history (1)

I went down to Fort Myers on Thursday afternoon and did the deal Friday. These cars have a recommended minimum break-in period of 500 miles, and 1500 for track purposes. That just means keeping the RPM's below 4,000, not using the paddle shift for downshifts (to avoid overspeeding the engine) and not using Cruise Control. The ride back up to Jax put about 360 on it. It had 5 miles on it when I drove it off the lot! My first new car ever.

I shot a side by side video when I picked up the C7, so I thought I would carry that on with this new unit;

41. Well, the speed limit on Interstates 4, 10, 75 & 95 is 70 miles per hour....
Sun Oct 15, 2023, 11:45 AM
Oct 2023

But if you're doing 70 you are going to be passed like you are tied to a post!

I've always felt (perhaps with good reason) that cops just love to pull over performance cars (also the reason I avoid red cars. They are much easier to spot in a crowd), so I've always lived by a few rules when driving on the freeway;

1) Never be the fastest car on the road. Let someone go by you regularly then keep up with that person at a distance.

2) Stay to the right as much as possible. It amazes me how many people will haul ass on the freeway and do it mostly in the left lane.

3) As much as is practical and safe to do so, look for cops on the entrance ramps as you pass them. Cops love to sit up on the ramp and shoot radar or laser at cars driving away from them. Also keep an eye out for brake lights ahead for the same reason: a hidden speed trap.

4) Keep in mind the 75 percent rule and the 10 percent rule;

75% rule states that the safest speed to travel, REGARDLESS of posted speed limit is that speed which 75% of the other vehicles are traveling. If the posted speed limit is 70 and 75% of the traffic is doing 90, then 90 is the safest speed. Conversely, if the speed limit is 70 and most of the traffic is doing 45, then 45 is the safest speed. Most cops will not single you out if you're in the 75% group.

The 10% rule states that most cops (of course, with exceptions) will give you 10% over the speed limit. So 71.5 MPH in a 65 zone, 38.5 in a 35 zone, etc. However, a Texas Highway Patrol Officer might not follow this in West Texas on I-10 where the limit is 80. 88 MPH is kind of pushing it!

So the answer to your question "where can you wind it out?" is almost every mile of freeway in Florida! But I'm not crazy and I also have a CDL, so avoiding interactions with Law Enforcement is paramount to keeping my career!

"1) Never be the fastest car on the road. Let someone go by you regularly then keep up with that person at a distance. "
We use to call it "Bird dogging"

Years ago I had a trucker (old CB days) ask me one time if I knew the difference between a "county mounty" and a phone pole. I figured, what the hell I'll bite. I said no and he said good, you get out front!! I laughed my ass off!!
A little ditty a cop told me one time. "5 your fine, 10 your mine"
This always worked for me..

"Cops love to sit up on the ramp and shoot radar or laser at cars driving away from them."

That was the ramp on county line road and I 95 in Miami. Other cop cars would line up and it was like shooting fish in a barrel..Just nailing them left and right..
Speed limits in Miami are just a mild suggestion..

I've been by there a bunch of time where the shooter is up on the overpass looking down and the chasers are all on the side of the road, about a half mile down. The overpass didn't have an exit, either, so you kind of don't expect it. Near the Charlotte County/Lee County line, if memory serves.

I graduated HS in Miami and got my 1st license in Dade County. I know of where you speak.

You must be thrilled! Congrats!!

I’m a girl from the mountains so my ride is 4-wheel drive…anyhoo, a couple years back I special ordered a new Kia Telluride in Salt Lake City…it took 7 months to get it built. I flew down to pick it up and drove it back to Montana on snow packed roads. It is a lovely vehicle and it was an exhilarating 8 hour drive home. Different…but kinda the same.

May you and this beauty have many wonderful miles together.

In your neck of the woods with the weather and all, a car like mine would be in the garage 6 months out of the year!

Those Tellurides are nice, though. From what I know of them, anyway. Kia and Hyundai have really stepped up their game on quality, that's for sure. Back when I hauled cars, I pulled a few loads out of the plant where it was built. West Point, GA., right along I-85 only a few miles from the Alabama line. That was before they introduced that model, though.

Stay safe this winter!

If there are no leaks it must be out of oil.
I’ve heard them all.

1985 MR2

‘72 TR6 has 7 forward gears/stock o’drive.

‘71 MGB GT o’drive in 4th only/ later transmission.
My first GT in the 90’s was a ‘69 with o’drive in 3rd and 4th.

Always garaged central Calif cars, no rust, fortunately.

I like the lines of Brit cars. Still have my eye out for a nearby TR250 that I can view in person. There’s Bring A Trailer auctions, but you never know.

C8 must have 9 gears or abouts?

Have fun and watch out!

I once met a cop with the shortest memory ever. He asked, ‘do you know why I pulled you over?’

Why do the Brits drink warm beer? Because all the refrigerators are made by Lucas!

Yes, there are dozens!

C8 has an 8 speed, dual clutch automatic with a manual mode and paddle shifters.

The comedian Sarah Silverman once said;

"A cop pulled me over and asked "Do you know why I pulled you over?"

"Because you got all C's in High School?"

My oldest brother had a MR2 of similar vintage. Fun little cars!

Cheers, and drive safe!

Very similar to mine except mine is a convertable and the upper part of the cabin is black. Be careful when you drive it as it handles like no other Corvette ever made. To be honest, I don't like it. There is a total disconnect with the road since the steering is fly by wire. The handling is rather off with that big hunk of aluminum behind you. They needed to bring it up to McLaren (I bought one a year later) standards. You can get it close with some tweaks to the front and rear suspension. The xmission you will need to change oil booth and filters at 500 miles and at the first service. Expensive for you (like $1,000 extra) but it can save the cost of a new xmission. There are a loot of other little niggles you will have to live with that you shouldn't.

by "There is a total disconnect with the road since the steering is fly by wire."

Are you saying the steering is not mechanically connected to the wheel? It does have electronic assist that modifies "feel" based on driving mode (Touring, Sport, Track, etc.) but I don't think I would call that "fly-by-wire".

Well, I'll see what I'm up against as far as operating costs go. I don't expect it to be outrageous, but I'm not taking it to Jiffy Lube for service, either.
