Giants fall to Dodgers, eliminated from playoff race

A season that could have ended long ago finally ended Tuesday night during one of the most curious sequences in Madison Bumgarner’s historic career. Back to back, the Dodgers hit home runs to chase the Giants’ left-hander, the finishing touches on what became a blue-clad clinching by the bay.

The Giants were eliminated from the National League West race when Clayton Kershaw spun a one-hitter and beat them 8-0 to secure the Dodgers’ third straight division title and start a Champagne festival in the visitors’ clubhouse at AT&T Park.

“It’s always tough,” Bumgarner said after watching the Dodgers celebrate on the Giants’ turf, “but you’ve got to take that and remember that going into the offseason. It’s not a fun feeling. You don’t want to be part of it. You want to be the one celebrating.”

Bumgarner gave up three home runs, two on consecutive pitches in the sixth inning. Justin Ruggiano hit a 67-mph roundhouse curve, A.J. Ellis an 89-mph fastball, both easily clearing the wall in left field, and Bumgarner’s night was done.
