Vin Scully’s final game will be in SF: ‘That really brings it full circle’

Vin Scully said Tuesday he won’t broadcast the Dodgers in the postseason, meaning the final broadcast of Scully’s celebrated career will be Oct. 2 in San Francisco.

“That really brings it full circle,” Giants broadcaster Jon Miller said before Tuesday night’s game at AT&T Park.

Scully, 88, grew up in New York a Giants fan and began following them as a child when walking home from school and noticing on a storefront the score of a game that day: Yankees 18, Giants 4.

It was Game 2 of the World Series. Oct. 2, 1936.

Scully recalled the moment in a 2014 Chronicle interview: “As a little kid, I said, ‘Oh, those poor Giants.’ That’s how I became a Giants fan, as God is my judge.”

1. Scully is a treasure

I've never lived in LA, but have had MLB Extra Innings a few times and absolutely LOVE listening to him calling a game. Dodger fans have my sympathy, I'd hate to have been listening to him my whole life and then have him retire! Pretty big shoes to fill.

2. I have been so lucky

I listened to Bob Prince as a kid.

While stationed in SoCal I listened to Vin Scully.

On my last assignment and into my civilian life I listened to Jack Buck.

All of these men were treasures and each had his own voice and style, but I am very sad to see Vin hang up the microphone. I stayed up well past my bedtime listening to him call an (almost) no hit game a couple weeks ago.

3. Jon Miller is going to be jazzed to be part of that history

He grew up in the San Francisco bay area listening to Russ Hodges and Lon Simmons, but occasionally caught a bit of Vin Scully's Dodgers games on KFI's 50,000 watt flamethrower signal when the sun went down. We all did it. That, and digest the Chronicle's green section box scores the next morning.
