Controversial A's catcher can't enter Canada for Blue Jays games
The Athletics are staring down a unique problem this afternoon.
Catcher Bruce Maxwell will be unable to enter Canada when the As play in Toronto later this week, per the San Francisco Chronicle, thanks to an indictment for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct last November an incident in which Maxwell was accused of pulling a gun on a food delivery person. Maxwell is ineligible to cross the border because he has yet to be sentenced and the charges include a gun enhancement.
Currently slashing .211/.244/.316 over 41 plate appearances, Maxwell will be sent to Triple-A Nashville for 10 days as a result. His sentencing is set for June 4, but Oakland doesnt play at Toronto again after this week. Maxwell made headlines last season for being the only MLB player to join in NFL players protest of the national anthem by kneeling, but did not continue doing so this season. This incident is unlikely to heavily affect the As lineup, as Maxwell backs up Jonathan Lucroy behind the plate.
Presumably, Lucroy wont expect to get an off-day this week.
