The San Diego Padres have agreed to acquire pitcher Mike Clevinger in a blockbuster deal with the Cleveland Indians, sources told ESPN's Jesse Rogers.
Right-hander Cal Quantrill, shortstop Gabriel Arias, outfielder Josh Naylor and catcher Austin Hedges are all going back to Cleveland in the deal, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan. Naylor will immediately slot in to left field.
The hard-throwing Clevinger represents the front-line starting pitcher long coveted by the Padres, who have won seven of their last 10 games and are 5 games behind the first-place Dodgers in the NL West.
Clevinger, 29, is 42-22 with a 3.20 ERA and 584 strikeouts in just 523 1/3 career innings over four-plus seasons with the Indians. He was demoted to the minors earlier this season after breaking coronavirus-related rules with teammate Zach Plesac.

Quantrill, Arias and Naylor are all young and should be under contact for several years -- typical Cleveland move. Naylor should be a welcomed addition in the outfield.
ON EDIT: ESPN further reports Cleveland acquired a total of six players, so add LHP Joey Cantillo, SS Owen Miller to the list.

WOW
I dont know anything about these Padres players. Wonder what well see?
And here I thought Francisco Lindor would have been gone before Clev.

(31,775 posts)A lot of prospects, but Naylor should be an improvement over Luplow. Two of these pick-ups are shortstops -- that's telling! Two are pitchers.
I'm thinking they keep Lindor now that the playoffs are a real possibility. They'll get a compensating draft pick when he signs with another team off season.

(2,234 posts)Im VERY sad to see Greg Allen go. I know he hasnt done anything this year hitting-wise, but I have a soft spot in my heart for him. The consolation is hes going back to his home town. But Im still sad. This is the part of baseball I hate.
We seem to do a lot of trades with the Padres. I might start following them to get familiar with players were eventually going to get in trades. 😂
