Hell be remembered most for that which cant be measured or even accurately explained. Sure, we have plenty of facts and figures we can use to celebrate the great baseball career of Bob Gibson -- the wins, strikeouts, shutouts, Cy Youngs, Gold Gloves and the World Series superlatives.
But its the competitiveness Gibson conveyed and the intimidation he inspired that truly shaped his legacy in this sport. And those are the qualities that we remember most now that he passed away Friday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 84. The Cardinals, the team on which he spent his entire 17-year career, confirmed the news Friday night.

(3,555 posts)In the 60s and 70s. Gibby was so dominant and when you learn more about his background, you find that he was one of the finest athletes of the 20th century. A high scoring basketball star at hometown Creighton University, a former Globetrotter, and a fantastic pitcher who would have been a position player if not for his great pitching.
The early years of his MLB career were hampered by playing for racist Cardinals manager, Solly Hemus. When Hemus was finally fired, Johnny Keane took over and told Gibson he would be treated with full respect. That was when Bob Gibson became the Bob Gibson on his way to a Hall of Fame career. Gibson demanded respect, and pity those who didnt realize it. A badass on the field and in life who was beloved by his teammates.
RIP, Gibby, and thanks for the memories.

He owned the inside, middle, and outside of the plate.
He dusted so many batters its ridiculous.
