most guys who spent a significant amount of time as a reliever has a losing record. A closer will almost never enter a game in a situation where they could get a W, but could get a loss in basically every game they enter.

HOFer Dennis Eckersley has a winning record is because he was a starter for some years before becoming a lights-out closer.
