Rod Carew was hitting .376 on his 150th game on September 13, 1977.

He finished at .388 in 155 games.

Tony Gwynn in 1994 was nearing 0.400 if I recall correctly (without looking it up)...1994 was also the year MLB killed my love of the game and replaced it with a benign passing interest.

2. Tony Gwinn came close.

He batted .370 in 1987, but I didn’t look to see how many games he played.

George Brett flirted with .400 one year as well, but I didn’t look up his final average that year (or how many games he played).

Musial… Carew… Gwynn… Brett… some of the all-time best pure hitters ever.

7. I am not sure what season you are referencing with respect to Tony.

In 1994 he played in 110 games, not 150. In 1987 he did play 157 games, but batted .370. not 376.

3. Went to see the Twins that year and Carew came into the stands and sat with us

It was July 4th. The crowd was pathetic. Just a couple of thousand.
We went early to watch BP. Carew took his cuts. Then he looked around and saw just a few people in the stands.

We were in low boxes behind 1st base dugout. Carew climbed up on top of the dugout, came in the stands and asked if he could join us for a few minutes.

We had quite the pleasant chat for about ten minutes. Then he said he had to go to work.

He got a couple of hits that night.
Oh yeah - this was at the old Met stadium where the giant shopping mall is now.
