Bumgarner gives tired Giants 'pen a break in 3-1 win
Philadelphia --
With the bullpen bedraggled and the skies foreboding, the Giants had the right guy on the mound Wednesday night. Madison Bumgarner was strong enough and good enough to give manager Bruce Bochy the innings he needed.
After playing 14 innings and nearly six hours Tuesday night, the Giants and Phillies endured a 59-minute rain delay in the fourth inning of a 0-0 game - not a big deal for the Giants' biggest, strongest pitcher.
Bumgarner rewarded his team with eight shutout innings, and Hunter Pence in turn rewarded his pitcher with a two-out, three-run double in the ninth that broke a scoreless tie and sent the Giants to a 3-1 victory, their third in three games in the series.
Bumgarner earned his 12th win.
The Giants grabbed a two-game lead in the National League West, their largest since June 27, assuring they will lead by at least 1 1/2 games when they open a three-game series against the Dodgers at AT&T Park on Friday.
The Giants improved to 5-1 on a trip that concludes Thursday and have won six of their past seven.
