Giants lose Philly finale but get most of rotation on trip

Philadelphia --

Students in Baseball Philosophy 101 can spend hours debating how important any July series can be. Even the professors view it differently.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly set his second-half rotation to ensure that his three best starters, Zack Greinke, Clayton Kershaw and Hyun-Jin Ryu, would face the Giants in a series that begins at AT&T Park on Friday night.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy went the other way, front-loading his rotation without much worry over Los Angeles.

For now, Bochy is ahead. While the Dodgers went 2-4 on their swing through St. Louis and Pittsburgh, with No. 5 starter Dan Haren starting and losing twice, the Giants completed a 5-2 trip to Miami and Philadelphia on Thursday with Madison Bumgarner winning twice.
