I learned he was the first player in either league to win batting titles in his first 2 years.

And, had an OPS of 840 for his career.
A professional hitter!

(2,291 posts)An excellent hitter, it was a shame he had knee injuries that shortened his career. The DH was started in 1972 which gave Oliva a chance to play this position his final 4 seasons. I am glad to see he made the Hall- he had some outstanding years in the 1960s when pitching dominated and he won his last batting crown in 1971.
I think Dick (Richie) Allen deserves enshrinement , also.

(69,864 posts)I was a Cubs fan, but we went to some Sox games.
We saw him in a game against the Orioles (I think) and he hit one over 450 feet. Had to be at least 455, maybe in the 460s.
It's still the longest homer I ever saw in person. That dude was another professional hitter.
That was the year he led the league in homers, RBI, walks OBP, OPS, and hit .308.
On that subject, my mom & little sister were on a school field trip to Wrigley when Phillies beat the Cubs 23-22.
That was the day that Kingman hit that bomb that hit the porch roof of the house on Kevdale. Coordinates on Google Earth say that was hit nearly 570 feet. And, my mom & sister were there!
