Joe Panik is the answer for Giants at 2nd base

The phone rang at 2 a.m. on June 21. That’s the kind of phone call parents of young men normally dread, but Paul and Natalie Panik were happy to be awakened.

Their son, Joe, was being called up by the Giants, and a few hours later they were on a plane from New York to Phoenix to see him play that night against the Diamondbacks.

They are thrilled to report they haven’t had a really good night’s sleep since.

“The three-hour time difference is the most difficult part,” Paul Panik said.

The Paniks watch games at their home in Hopewell Junction, N.Y., late into the night. They try to figure out when is the right time for a phone call. They have witnessed their 23-year old navigate his debut season in the major leagues with a mixture of anxiety and excitement.
