(19,312 posts)So who are we going hang the moniker, "Mr. November" on?
Playing baseball in November is ridiculous. The season got a late start because of the lockout. They decided to cram an entire season in anyway.
Too many double-headers, and rainouts created even more. Greed, as in everything else, is the cause for all of this.
It wasn't that many years ago (to me anyway) that the first player breached the $1 million a year mark (Nolan Ryan, 1979). Now they're talking about Judge topping $50 million per year. It's a game, dammit! In 1973 I could have purchased the New York Yankees for $10 million. I was actually considering it, but as a 25 year old there was no way a bank was going to float me a loan for $10 million. Steinbrenner and his group ended up buying it. If the Yankees were to be sold today (and I wouldn't put it past the greedy Steinbrenner kids, who did absolutely nothing to earn the money) the price would be well over $2 billion. Not a bad ROI for George Steinbrenner (if he were still alive). 🙄 200 times their investment.I think that would outpace inflation, dont you?
There's just too much greed in any sport today, by players and owners.

(19,312 posts)which part?
Drum
(9,776 posts)In 2001, after NYC was attacked on September 11th, our NY Yankees schedule was complicated in the playoffs, as was the use of our stadium. I think that there were some concessions here in NY that extended the season a bit. Jeter had some memorable playoff plays in those later-than-usual playoffs, and thats how that year he garnered the nick Mister November that year.
SergeStorms
(19,312 posts)Jeter had a terrible series in 2001. I think he batted .148 or something near that, with 1 home run. "Mr. November" was more tongue in cheek I believe. It was far and away his worst World Series performance out of the 7 he appeared in.
Jackson had a .357 batting average over 5 World Series with 10 home runs. He really earned the "Mr. October" title. He was a monster when it came to batting in the Series.

(9,666 posts)...but they've been driven up by greedy club owners who want a particular player badly enough to meet their price. The spiraling upward continues, with each player trying to beat the best deal that someone else at that position had gotten. It pissed me off when Carlos Correa left the Astros in free agency. He turned down a five-year Houston offer for $160 MILLION. That's $32 million/year, but no, that wasn't good enough. So he signed a 3-year, $105 million contract with Minnesota, which comes out to $35 million/year. That's just fucking insane. Turning down $32 million a year for $35 million a year. And now he wants to go free agent AGAIN, probably looking for $40 million/year.
How in the world do the teams bring in enough in tickets and advertising to cover that kind of payroll.
Current payroll for Houston (rounded figures, including bonuses):
$154 million (entire team)
$30 million - Alex Bregman
$29 million - Jose Altuve
$25 million - Justin Verlander
$16 million - Lance McCullers
$14 million - Ryan Pressley
$13 million - Will Smith (from the Atlanta Braves, and Smith didn't even get included on the WS team caused he pitched so badly)
$12 million - Zack Greinke (not even on the team anymore, but still getting paid!)
$10 million - Trey Mancini (so far, a washout)
$8 million - Hector Neris
$8 million - Yordan Alvarez
amounts not shown for the rest of the current roster

It's just disgusting.
Total payrolls:
$219 million - New York Mets (of all people)
$172 million - Philadelphia
$166 million - San Diego
$159 million - LA Dodgers
$159 million - Atlanta
$154 million - Houston
$150 million - New York Yankees
$149 million - Chicago White Sox
$141 million - Colorado
$133 million - Los Angeles Angels
The lowest is Baltimore with a $19 million payroll

I wonder what Aaron Judge will command if he goes free agent this year?
SergeStorms
(19,312 posts)going to command somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 million per year. He's looking for at least a 5 year deal.
No one is worth that sort of money. This year was the best year he'll ever have. It's all downhill from here.
