THE MORTON ARBORETUM
Barred Owl ( Strix varia ) chick climbing tree. I watched the owlet falling from the tree than it spent 2 hours until finally found a good tree to get to safety. It usually takes only couple minutes for the young owls to get in the trees. Most nests are in old trees with a rough bark so easy to climb. This owlet chose to climb on young tree and didn't have any success. Became tired but in the end succeeded. Please don't "save" fallen owlets - this is very normal part of their life . Video taken on 5-18-2021 at The Morton Arboretum, Illinois.

(12,904 posts)I have owls in the backyard. They get up in the trees at night and screech at each other.
It can be terrifying.

(38,301 posts)That must be something to hear! The only owls I hear are the softly "whooing" kind.

(12,904 posts)The area is ringed on three sides by tall trees.
There are three owls that hang out there all the time. Three different kinds of owl.
The little guy, about 8 inches tall, is the loudest. Sounds like a woman screaming. The big one, 16-24 inches, is more The who-who type, but he screeches loud, too. Middle guy, 10-12 inches, is just loud and brown. They seem to meet up sometimes, theres a big screaming match, and then all goes deathly quiet.
Very spooky.

(38,301 posts)I wonder what they were discussing. The same day I saw my first owl on a hike I also saw my first beaver. it was on a trail about a mile west of me & they were both by/in the creek, although not near each other.
