Related: About this forumThe 49ers are looking like the class of the NFL
They just stomped the Cowboys 42-10.
There's only one other 5-0 team in the entire league: the Philadelphia Eagles. But the 49ers have the better points for/points against mark, by a fair margin (+37 for Philly, +99 for the 49ers, so they're beating their opponents by almost 20 points per game, on average).
And San Fran QB Brock Purdy is now 12-0 in NFL games to start his career!

(5,758 posts)Looking forward to the Eagles game, where home field adventure throughout the playoffs will probably be determined.
I like the Niners' chances.

(20,110 posts)but based on what we've seen to this point in the 2023-24 season, I would favor the Dolphins over them. That Miami offense is explosive, even outside of the 70-point trampling of the Broncos.

(31,775 posts)1): This came as a surprise perhaps, but San Francisco's O-line dominated the Dallas D-line most of the night, moving them backward on a majority of run plays. Blocks are one thing, but to move the D-line backwards, consistently, is something else. Credit Dallas for holding the the 49ers rushing total to "just" 170 yards (it could have been a lot more) and for the handful of passes they knocked kdown.
2): 49er receivers were so wide open. Where was the Dallas secondary? Credit either awesome routes and misdirection by S.F. or a Dallas secondary that was simply outplayed and overwhelmed.
3): Brock Purdy is looking like a version of Joe Cool. Comfortable in the pocket, able to loft or drill passes with precision, making great reads, and in total command. Kudos to QB coach Brian Griese for the mentoring, Shanahan (and his coaches) for the system, and to Purdy, who has bought into it lock, stock and barrel.
4): Impact linebackers Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw had a career defining game. Greenlaw was tasked with "spying" for draws and scrambles by Prescott as well. The 49ers defense had been burned in previous games in which the pass rush penetrated so deeply it left huge holes open in the middle for QBs to run. Defensive coordinator Steve Wilks finally (IMO) addressed this and assigned the perfect player, Greenlaw, to contain Prescott. Warner, meanwhile, employed the usual mayhem. These guys are awesome together.
5): This was supposedly the early-season test game against a potential playoff opponent, not the rebuilding Steelers or Rams, the injured Cardinals, or hapless New York Giants. Maybe Chris Collinsworth said it best (paraphrasing) "Either San Francisco is a lot better than everyone thought or Dallas isn't that good."

(20,110 posts)The 49ers are in the Dawg Pound next weekend. The 49ers and the Browns have the league's two best defenses, statistically speaking, so far this season.
Which team will you be rooting for and what's your prediction?
I'll pick San Fran to win, but not by a blowout this time: 17-14.

(31,775 posts)Browns are one dimensional and have exhibited a flat offense in the games Ive seen. I agree with your assessment, albeit with a little wider margin of points. 49ers will play it conservatively as they do with weaker teams but should win easily.
Yes, the Browns D has impressive numbers, but the teams theyve faced had been struggling Bengals, Steelers, Ravens and Titans. Cleveland hasnt faced an offense like San Franciscos.
Any idea what the weather will be like?
True Dough
(20,110 posts)but I don't put a lot of stock in it this far out. from game day.
Valid point on the weak offenses that the Browns have faced so far. Hard for any team to contain the 49ers but I think Cleveland won't get embarrassed.

(20,110 posts)That Browns defense is among the league's best, for sure. San Fran gets the Bangles next week. Another disappointing performance would surely be a concern.
The Chiefs won, but not by much of a margin over a Broncos defense that practically every other team has trampled. KC has some kinks to work out on offense. The receiving corps is under-utilized. So for them to be 5-1 without firing on all cylinders is seemingly a positive sign.

(4,962 posts)Just in time for Kirk Cousins to have his once-a-season coming out party.
As for the Bangles, I like their chances if Susanna Hoffs' shoulder holds out
True Dough
(20,110 posts)It is the 49ers/Vikes next week. I think Cousins' big blowout game will have to wait under Justin Jefferson returns (if Justin Jefferson returns this season).
I have written Bangles instead of Bengals more than once in this lifetime. It's a repeated Bungle.

(20,110 posts)So you're a playa, playa? We inevitably have someone drop out of our 12-team DU fantasy football league each year. I could come knocking next September when we're looking for a manager to step up.

(4,962 posts)There were ten teams, and I was co-commissioner with another guy. Looking back, it was fun at times, especially the Mondays when you'd won and got to give shit to your opponent that week. And, most of us were in adjacent departments so you saw each other regularly.
But, that was some years ago and it's been a while since I played. I still watch games whenever they're on, but I don't follow the personnel aspect of the game all that too closely, or the draft for that matter, so I'd be at a disadvantage at this point, but thanks for thinking of me.

(20,110 posts)Maybe he can consult Aaron Rodgers on the super rehab program?
In the meantime, the Vikings better swing a quick trade or else the season comes down to rookie Jaren Hall, Nick Mullens (currently out with an injured back) or Sean Mannion.
Good luck with that!

(4,962 posts)If you love football that's a tough injury to see, regardless of whom you cheer for. No doubt a rough morning for Vikings fans. It looked like they were getting their act together and might be able to keep pace with Detroit or at least hang around if the Lions faltered, but that injury is devastating. Well, I guess they used up all of their good luck last year by winning all of those close games they probably shouldn't have won. Maybe they can make a move before the deadline, but that's a crapshoot at best.

(20,110 posts)Workman-like 225 to 250 yards per game, tosses for a TD most times, two on a good day. Maybe a pick. Steady but not a high ceiling.
Will be interesting to see if/when Jefferson returns and whether the two of them can build any chemistry. Addison and Osborn are good WRs too. Maybe they can get Dobbs some 300+ yard games.
