For El Supremo: Horns receiver Jones suspended after aggravated assault charge

Longhorns wide receiver Cayleb Jones was suspended from the team Tuesday after being charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, for what Austin police say was throwing a punch that broke the jaw of a UT men’s tennis player last month in a dispute over a member of the volleyball team.

An arrest warrant was issued Tuesday. Jones was booked and released from Travis County Jail after posting bail.

A second-degree felony is punishable by a prison term of two to 20 years and a fine not to exceed $10,000.

“The fractured jaw is a serious injury, so that’s why it’s … a felony aggravated assault,” said Austin police Cpl. Anthony Hipolito. “ … It was serious enough to where detectives thought that aggravated assault needed to be filed.”
