Keeper operation questions

So the keeper deadline is approaching and (I think) we've settled on three keepers. I understand that we skip draft rounds for each one we keep. My question is: is the draft round skipped automatically round 1, 2, or 3 depending on how many players I keep? That is, there is no difference keeping Calvin Johnson or Kenny Britt? If so, then we should only keep last years high value players.

I've heard of other platforms that somehow tie kept player to a specific round in the draft, but not necessarily just counting from the top. That way, someone can keep a youngster, for example, as a project. Although come to think of it, personally I probably wouldn't use a slot that way. Yahoo documentation says they support "many models" of keeper-dom, but I haven't found anything specific on that, though I could just be blind.
