Footbal fans, what's going to happen to the "Rose Bowl" now that the PAC-12 is kaput?

The Rose Bowl dates back to when Knute Rockne was still coaching Notre Dame and taking his team to the Rose Bowl. They beat Stanford in the 1925 game.

The famed stadium is still there in Pasadena. I can't imagine it staying vacant on New Year's Day.

The 2025 Rose Bowl is scheduled to be played on January 1, 2025, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

The 111th annual Rose Bowl game will be one of the playoff quarterfinals and will feature two of the playoff teams. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. PST.

The long history and pagentry of the Rose Bowl, with its associated parade, always appealed to me. The PAC 10 did not survive, partially because of the time zone disparity which created challenges in scheduling television coverage of their home games. Best wishes to all of the teams which made up the PAC 10.

4. It was last the PAC-12 and it survived for several decades...

from 8 to 10 and finally 12 schools. It always featured te Pacific Atheletic Conference champion with a team fron the east...for many decades there was an agreement with the BIG-10 Conference to send it's champion to play there.

The time zone difference was not a factor as the parade and game were televised successully for many decades. What killed that arrangement was the smise of the PAC conference.

That's a sad fact for college Atheletics which is changing radically with NIL now and the SEC and BIG-10 becoming by far the two dominating conferences.

I cannot believe USC and UCLA will be Big Ten members. I still haven’t gotten used to Maryland leaving the ACC and I no longer follow them. Also, how long is the Big Ten going to use the ridiculous practice of calling themselves the Big Ten when the conference will have 18 members next season?

11. That's why it is smart

to use a geographical name for the conference, like the ACC or SEC.

Having Pacific coast teams would make it difficult to give a geographical area name to this conference, though.

9. Thank you for correcting me that the PAC had 12 teams as of late.

Of course, time zone consideration has nothing to do with televising the parade or the Rose Bowl. However, I did read that the time zone differential prevented the PAC-12 conference from negotiating a more favorable TV broadcasting deal.

It's sad as PAC-12 teams regularly beat the BIG-10 schools in the Rose Bowl game.

Sad to see it go.

I did get your sly remark about the Rose Bowl being the BIG-10 trophy. IIFC correctlythough, they lost quite a lot in the Rose Bowl game. Michigan could hardly ever win, Ohio State didn't do much all that much better. And the rest of the BIG-10 schools hardly ever got there.

10. All through the 1970s and well into the 1980s,

the Pac-8 (later the Pac-10 with the two Arizona schools) owned the Big Ten. Look up some of those games and you will see some very high-ranked Big 10 teams (like Ohio St. who was ranked #1 after the 1975 season) getting beat by big underdogs.

From 1970 through 1989, the Pac-10 went 16-4 against the Big 10.

In 1902 Michigan beat Stanford 49-0.

The game was so lopsided that for the next 13 years, the Tournament of Roses officials ran chariot races, ostrich races, and other various events instead of football. But, on New Year's Day 1916 football returned to stay as Washington State University defeated Brown University in the first annual Tournament of Roses football game.

College football is less and less fun as the NCAA pursues the almighty dollar. These conferences are stupid. Too much travel, not to mention the loss of regional competition and some rivalry games becoming add-ons

16. NIL, the new mega conferences requiring coast-to-coast travel for some teams...

has skewed the whole college football environment. USC and UCLA will have to travel three and four time zones to placy conference games.

These new alignments still have to work themselves out. More shake-ups to come.
