This Will Be Brock Purdy's Last Season on the San Francisco 49ers

Quarterback is the most critical position on a team to determine success. For the San Francisco 49ers, they are in a predicament with Brock Purdy, but one that will end with 2024 being his last season in San Francisco.

Purdy came onto the scene for the 49ers toward the backend of his rookie season in 2022 and did so mightily. After being the last pick in the draft, Purdy threw for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns and only four interceptions. How Purdy commanded the offense on short notice for the 49ers in place of Jimmy Garoppolo led to him starting at the beginning of the 2023 season. That’s where things started to become more clear, though.

Purdy started strong, and continued to prove doubters wrong with the level of play. Yet, once defenses truly started to catch on to his level of play, it was clear that Purdy is a game manager quarterback. Kyle Shanahan’s offensive scheme is quarterback proof, which led to Purdy being able to play well due to how well it’s simplified. During the three game losing stretch though, the clear issues started fully showing.

When the 49ers fell behind and couldn’t rely on the run game, Purdy struggled to close games out and threw more interceptions due to not handling the pressure well. It’s clear, he is not a game-changing quarterback. During that losing stretch, he had five interceptions to three touchdowns. Those same issues held the 49ers back from beating the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl and if the 49ers truly want to win a Super Bowl, they need to move on and make this the last season with Purdy under center.

He'll stay. It's more likely the last season for Samuel, Kittle, Williams, and Juszczyk. Auggie Jul 8 #3

Suggest you watch some Purdy highlight reels - like the throw to Jennings in the playoffs, an ally oop of a completion. So many dynamic throws.

While other teams are working to improve play against the Niners' offense with Purdy, Purdy and his team mates are scheming right back. It's an endless loop.

Every team is competitive, any given Sunday as they say. To make it to the playoffs, through to the Superbowl, any other team would love to be in that place and be within one play of winning. Given the injuries to the defense, it's amazing they kept it close in the 4th and overtime.

Go Niners!

Maybe McCaffrey. And Charvarius Ward, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and safety Talanoa Hufanga.

Why? Salary cap, health and age.

San Francisco Chronicle: 49ers’ draft approach made it clear: Their ‘Last Dance’ could get ugly

Kyle Shanahan’s team has a star-studded roster full of big personalities, prolific veterans who understandably have become fan favorites. Together, they’ve won a lot of games and made a lot of memories. They won’t all be gone after 2024, but make no mistake — a year from now, the 49ers’ depth chart will look very, very different.

SNIP

Shanahan, the team’s eighth-year head coach, and general manager John Lynch ultimately chose not to trade either Samuel or Aiyuk, essentially because they didn’t feel they were offered enough to make it worth their while. Instead, the plan is to kick the can and make a ferocious push for a championship — and then, regardless of outcome, deal with the fallout next spring (though they did select another wideout in the first round of the draft in Ricky Pearsall).

One of those receivers — likely Samuel — will be gone a year from now. Tight end George Kittle and fullback Kyle Juszczyk could be sent packing, too. All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, who’ll be 37 at the start of the 2025 season, may choose to retire, something he openly mused about doing 14 months ago. For all his awesomeness, Christian McCaffrey will be a 29-year-old running back with nine seasons of pounding in his past.

It doesn’t end there, either. Cornerback Charvarius Ward, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and safety Talanoa Hufanga are among the recent Pro Bowl selections who might be spending their final season in the 49ers’ defensive huddle.

Enjoy it while you can, BTW. Like you did the 2014-2022 Warriors. And the 2010-2016 Giants.
