Wear green to the Giants-Bears game....to support mental illness awareness.

Chicago Bear Brandon Marshall has struggled with mental illness, and for years, chose to make his struggle public. He speaks often about how he wants to remove the stigma from mental illness. His foundation is dedicated to fighting mental illness.

As written about on FTW, Marshall wants to wear green cleats during Thursday night’s game against the Giants to mark Mental Health Awareness Week. He is willing to not only pay the fine associated with going outside the uniform code, but match that fine in a donation to charity.

The NFL caught wind of this, and originally said Marshall wouldn’t be allowed to take the field with his green cleats on. The league, according to NFL.com, appears to have now changed that decision.

Which was absolutely the right thing to do.

It’s one thing to penalize a player after he has broken the rules. It’s another to keep him from playing because of the shoes he wears — especially given the fact he’s not wearing the shoes for vanity or sponsorship sake. He’s pushing a cause – much like the NFL has been doing with breast cancer awareness.

Marshall wants to raise awareness of mental health issues at a time when the NFL could use it.
