Owners vote to move extra point try to 15-yard line

NFL owners voted on Tuesday to approve a proposal to change the extra point try to the 15-yard line, NFL head of officials Dean Blandino said.

Additionally, the defense will have the opportunity to return a blocked kick for two points. Two-point conversion attempts will still be from the 2-yard-line, as extra point kicks had been previously.

The owners of the Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders voted against the changes, Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports. Three-fourths of owners had to approve the changes for it to pass.

The owners considered three proposals for changing the extra point when they hold their spring meetings this week: One by the New England Patriots, one by the Philadelphia Eagles and one by the league's competition committee. The competition committee's proposal is the one that was approved.

A PAT attempt was occasionally interesting, but in reality, anything could happen.

This change is the offense showing its hand up front. Once you're on the 15 yard line, you can only kick. I'm assuming they wouldn't all suddenly break for the 2 yard line for a two-pointer, right? I liked kick from 2 yard line, extra point for scoring a short touchdown.

This could lead to some additional uncontrolled violence and injury. I bet players aren't for it.

And even less so when the rules are controlled by the owners. But the point after kicks are essentially a yawner as is, normally like watching a tap-in putt.

in football.

It was a pedestrian quick play except where someone made an issue of it or it became an issue by a miss. There was always the potential, now this is a game changer!

From 15 yards, what coach wouldn't throw somebody at the kicker?

I remember I did Saints vs Jaguars -- they needed a win at the last game of the season to stay alive (I think as it turned out the Saints would have been eliminated anyway) so I had a feeling they were going to lateral their way to the touchdown then had a feeling the kicker would miss the XP to tie the game and sure enough both happened. One of the crazy finishes I ever seen all-time.

The issue comes back to why do they need to do an extra point and go from there but this changes a lot of things not just for making the PAT more difficult but I 7s for TDs was more of a reward for FGs and odds are still high for a 15 PAT but a lot more 6s for TDs and 2 FGs to even it out. I liked the funky scoring system.
