Several N.F.L. Coaches Depart as Regular Season EndsThe new year may invoke the idea of a fresh beginning, but for a certain class of underperforming or unwanted N.F.L. coaches it always means the end.
And so it was as several teams the Oakland Raiders, the Detroit Lions, the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts fired their coaches and began a search for a new leader.
The Lions on Monday dismissed Jim Caldwell, who will leave the team despite having a winning record of 36-28 after four years. Within hours, another veteran coach, John Fox, was ousted by the Bears.
Caldwell and Fox join Chuck Pagano of the Colts and Jack Del Rio of the Raiders, who were fired after their teams final games on Sunday.
Bruce Arians, the coach of the struggling Arizona Cardinals (8-8), announced his retirement Monday. Last month, the Giants dismissed their coach, Ben McAdoo, who was hired in 2016.

(11,436 posts)I'm guessing he would have hung on had Oakland not been able to lure Gruden away from ESPN. And that tells me that Gruden (or more likely his people) were in contact with the Raiders while Del Rio was still coach, which is a really crappy move on Gruden's part.
Ferrets are Cool
(21,957 posts)but if Gruden does take this job, I hope he fails miserably. Why? Just because he IMHO needs to eat some humble pie. I know most will disagree with me.

(11,436 posts)I find him fairly obnoxious and never thought of him as that great a coach. The Bucs won their Super Bowl because of their defense. Gruden may have changed the culture when he took over for Dungy, but he certainly wasn't able to do much once that defense started aging. I also find the QB "camp" that he does before the draft to be silly and gimmicky (which is a pretty good description of Gruden himself).

(7,419 posts)I am certainly hoping for him to fail. The words "over" and "rated" come to mind when ever I hear him speak.
