(186,685 posts)Don't forget, the NFL actually LOST a lawsuit to Trump.

(17,440 posts)It was a systematic and involved violation, over multiple years. This wasn't just a silly uniform violation. It was integral to how the game is played and it provided a real advantage to the side that repeatedly, and aggressively, violated it.
It involved taking balls which had already been checked by a ref to a place with no video surveillance and letting pressure out.
NOT a minor violation. Brady's fumble rate went WAY up and his successful pass rate went down after it was stopped.
Could they win without doing it? Of course. But that isn't the point. They did it.
The patriots have been caught cheating multiple times. Some trivial, some not. But cheating provides advantages not available to both sides. Which is why rules exist.

(31,261 posts)Brady passed for over 400 yards in one of those wins.
The ball that caused the whole thing happened on a Brady interception late in the first half, by then the balls had been sitting out in the cold for more than two hours. There is something called the ideal gas law, it applies to all gases, especially air, it is VP = nRT, R is a constant, n is the air that was put into the ball, so for that game, it would have been a constant once the balls were on the sideline (actually there would have been minor valve stem loss, but for all intents and purposes, n was constant). The volume of the ball also would have been a constant since the ball shell was a bladder (actually, because T dropped during the first half, the effective V would have followed pressure, but for all intents, the bladder volume didn't change. That leaves P = T, where the pressure in the ball is directly proportional to temperature, so a change in temperature causes a change in P, in the case of that game T decreased, so P had to decrease, the balls naturally deflated in the cold.
Another point, the NFL now keeps game and kicking balls that will be used on the field in temperature CONTROLLED trunks. This came about after the NFL ran a study the season following the Deflategate game, a study whose data the NFL destroyed without publishing.

(17,440 posts)That the patriots could still win without that particular cheat. It's that they were systematically and repeatedly cheating to improve their chances.
Millionaires still engage in wage theft from employees. They don't need the money. Doing it is still illegal aqnd immoral.
Same can be said for trump. It doesn't matter he eventually released some of the ukranian aid, he still abused his power and broke laws.
Brady is a common cheat, he just wasn't charged. He did get fined and suspended. But not nearly enough. That doesn't even include the statistical analysis that shows fumble rates did go up after they were found out and forced to comply.
So yeah, brady is a dirty rotten cheater. It's not trivial.

(31,261 posts)running tests the season after Deflategate? Seems rather strange if it proved that balls don't naturally deflate when exposed to the elements. So you are saying that science doesn't matter when it doesn't fit your narrative?

(17,440 posts)The patriots deflated the balls AFTER a ref checked them. They had control of the balls.
Putting them in "trunks" keeps them away from the teams. Temp control is a plus, but it wasn't needed until the patriots were found to have cheated.
Theirs wasn't a case of temp changes causing a pressure drop in the balls. They were found to have deflated them with a needle.
What part of they cheated isn't clear?

(17,440 posts)The nfl found that the patriots used a needle to let air out. It wasn't temp related.
It was cheating.
That doesn't mean temp control wasn't a good idea, just had nothing to do with the findings.

(31,261 posts)Again, if the goal is just to deny access to balls by anyone but officials, WHY add temperature control to the trunks, seems excessive if one buys into your logic.

(29,351 posts)Brady was guilty. He was the one that lobbied for rule changes where quarterbacks have more control over the ball because he claimed to have sleepless nights worrying what the other team might do to the ball.

(31,261 posts)If their charges are right, have them explain WHY does the NFL now keeps game balls (play balls and kicking balls) in a temperature controlled trunk during games.
