Andrew Berry officially named Browns new GM and Executive VP of Football Operations

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Jimmy Haslam finally achieved the organizational alignment he’s been seeking when Andrew Berry was officially announced Tuesday as the Browns’ 16th full-time general manager and sixth since the Haslams took over the team in 2012.

Berry will be tasked with taking the Browns to the playoffs for only the second time since their rebirth in 1999, and snapping the streak of 12 straight losing seasons. He’ll work closely with Chief Strategy Officer Paul DePodesta and new coach Kevin Stefanski in an all-Ivy League triumvirate.

The youngest GM in the NFL at 32, Berry takes over for John Dorsey, who overhauled the roster in his two-plus seasons, but hired a coach in Freddie Kitchens who sources describe as “a train wreck’’ in his one season as head coach. Kitchens and Dorsey were both let go after their lone 6-10 season together with one of the most talented rosters in the NFL.

Berry, who was Browns Vice President of Player Personnel here from 2016-2018, watched the Browns go 8-39-1 in his time here, including 0-16 in 2017.

Berry left Cleveland in 2019 to take over as Eagles Vice President of Football Operations and have more authority over roster decisions.

It's important these guys have two-three years to build and coach a winning team. Draft and sign substance, not flash or style -- men, not children. And no head cases. Head cases kill teams.

If you make a mistake there will be thousands of people to remind you that you made a mistake. I could never imagine all that pressure, millions watching. You'd need good mental health treatment to be able to deal with all that. I'm so glad I'm not a celebrity sometimes.

And if you do draft a head case, at least use the lower rounds.

After they become drafted. I know because I am human myself and would absolutely crumble under all this professional pressure. I just hope athletes seek good mental health treatment to deal with all the pressure.

though these guys have already been through college too.

That's why a football team signs a veteran like Richard Sherman as well -- established players who've already been there.
