Focus on fundamentals: 49ers draft pick Trey Lance showing incredible improvement
NBC Sports:
Quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello, like coach Kyle Shanahan, is conservative in his praise of Lances play, but thus far admires the rookie's work ethic. The position coach believes the North Dakota State product, like every quarterback in his room, will need to continue focusing on mechanics to succeed in the NFL.
After OTAs, the No. 3 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft worked with motion mechanics coach John Beck, who is part of Tom Houses group of quarterback coaches at 3DQB. The group has famously worked with former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matt Stafford, among others.

S.F. Chronicle:
Beck knows how the 49ers coach QB footwork, which Shanahan believes is instrumental when it comes to accuracy. Part of the long-held belief that accuracy cant be coached is tied to the notion that its difficult to successfully overhaul a QBs natural throwing motion. Slowik said Lance needed to have a stronger throwing base so he could move and still be in an athletic position to make throws.
Personally, Im not big in ever feeling like youre going to adjust a (QBs) ability to be a better thrower with his upper body, Scangarello said. As little time as you have to be a good player in this league, where you can improve the most is in your lower body. And thats where more of the issues come with somebody not being accurate Trey or any other player.
What I will say is with all quarterbacks, when youre trying to improve throwing mechanics, Trey or anyone else, there are some fundamental things that a guy has to master, Scangarello said. And you never know how long its going to take that individual.

Footwork! A fundamental often overlooked, and one of the reasons I think Colin Kaepernick could never quite master the throw (didn't take footwork drills seriously).
Here's why Lance's development is huge for the 49ers: adding a second QB to any play (who can accurately pass and run) disrupts a defense in situations when Jimmy Garoppolo alone can't. Lance can be lined-up under center, in the backfield or slot. It's been done before, of course. But in the hands of Kyle Shanahan I expect we'll see things never done before.
