Related: About this forumI so hate it when powerhouse teams run up the score against seriously inferior teams: AL 59: NM 3
I mean is that really necessary, Alabama? At least GA sent in the secondary minutes into last week's third quarter to give them practice having already shown they were overpowering Missouri, (still finishing 43:6 and a solid win with the second string, nonetheless).
If AL did so as well, I will stand corrected, but I don't think they did. Did anyone see that game?

it is possible to beat alabama. you have to play your very best game and still need a little luck, but it is possible.

(51,466 posts)Their starters played the first half. In the second, they sent as much of their bench in as they could - quite a few of their players are on injured reserve. Saban dresses three quarterbacks, and all three played.

(29,351 posts)New Mexico State is technically division 1 but they are a tune up team that should not be playing Alabama on the road.

(5,687 posts)Bryce Young, Alabama's first string QB, was pulled after the first series of the second half.
The only scores by Alabama in the second half were by the second string running back, a touchdown, and the backup placekicker, a field goal. Bama pretty much emptied the bench by the fourth quarter.

(3,650 posts)To have a game where we could play those 2nd and 3rd string. They needed to get the experience.

(54,157 posts)They would beat northwestern 70-3 and everyone would be pissed they allowed a field goal.
Every play a run. Maybe they'd throw *one* pass in the 4th quarter, get intercepted, and swear not to throw another pass the rest of the season.
Four yards and a cloud of dust every play. Like a machine. Once in a while they'd break through for a big run, and once in a while they'd have to punt.
The crowd loved it; I thought it was boring as hell.
Average lineman 330 lbs vs average lineman 300 lbs.
What's the point of watching?

(3,831 posts)college basketball was completely boring. The "4 corners offense" that was popular at the time resulted in games with scores like 15 to 13.

(15,043 posts)They were still mostly BORING to watch during the Tressel years too, though, with the obsession about field position and his motto that the punt is the most important play in football.
Now it's mostly fun to watch the Buckeyes for me, and it's AGONIZING to watch other teams play except maybe Georgia and Alabama this season.
The Michigan / Penn State game was horrid to watch yesterday.
And teams like undefeated Cincinnati remind me more of a high school team with their smaller linemen.

(29,351 posts)I think the Cincinnati coach was with Tressell earlier in his career. Love watching Cincinnati play and they had a lot of blowouts and they have that win against Norte Dame on the road. Not impressed with SEC playing tune up teams in November.
Ohio State does have a really good offense though.

(24,630 posts)Alabama was favored by 50 points. If they won by 24, they would have underperformed in the eyes of the ranking body.
BTW - there have been enough come-from-behind, beat-ridiculous-odds victories in sports the past few decades that theres no room to be nice and not score points that are easy to score. Victory is everything. That last thing any team needs is to be ahead by 30, decide to be nice and end up losing. Auburn was up 28 to 3 over Mississippi today and lost 43-34.
The real problem is scheduling powerhouse teams to play far inferior teams. Soft schedules shouldnt exist for the top teams. Its called SOS, Strength of Schedule.

(3,650 posts)Cupcake games are how these smaller schools fund their programs. Plus, those teams get experience. I dont really like it as a fan. But, I get why both sides do it. The one thing I hate is there are always injuries. Happens every time.

The winning coach called the game and they did practice and training with the other team for the rest of the 'game'.

(26,729 posts)Sigh. The other school tended to have older players and were clearly a better team, but that was unnecessary. There's a reason to have mercy game endings.
