Related: About this forumHow the Rams beat the 49ers
Analysis by Eric Branch, San Francisco Chronicle / 1-31-22
Bottom line? Make Garoppolo beat them.
Highlights from the article:
They flooded the box, left tackle Trent William said of the Rams defense. A couple times they brough in an extra D-lineman. Obviously when youre the 49ers and youre known for coming in and running the ball weve really marched the ball up and down the field in the run game on this team the last six times we played them.
The biggest thing I noticed is that any time we did any of our motions, they just started blitzing through all the gaps, (49ers tight end George) Kittle said. They just sent their linebackers downhill
Makes it kind of hard when they had nine, 10 guys in the box. Just makes it difficult.
Some excellent examples of the Rams strategy came on two of the games biggest plays, with the 49ers leading 17-14 with about 11 minutes left and facing 2nd-and-1 at the Rams 44. The Rams alignment: They had a six-man defensive front and nine defenders were within five yards of the line of scrimmage.

FROM THE LINK: Defensively, 49er DE Nick Bosa and FS Jimmy Ward admitted being totally fatigued by the fourth quarter. Said Bosa: "I definitely felt that first half on my legs a little bit, which I usually dont. So missing our opportunities on third down, which wed been pretty damn good at all year, was one of the reasons we lost.

Hey, hats off to the Sean McVey and the Rams. They targeted the 49ers Achilles' Heel on offense -- Jimmy Garoppolo -- and beat the defense with (IMO) a stellar, imaginative passing attack.
Why Mike Shanahan or Mike McDaniel (offensive coordinator) kept calling run plays up the middle against that Rams' box is a mystery to me.
Trey Lance: you're up.

(13,964 posts)49ers win when they run a lot. So, that was targeted. 49ers had to play a rookie on pass defense. So he was targeted.
That's asking a lot from a rookie. Front office "dropped the ball" here.
As for the defective play calling, and snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, Kyle has lost two superbowls with the clock winding down, play calling, and now an NFC title match. At least, he's consistent.
He's a great coach, for 7/8 of the game.
The Raiders haven't hired a head coach yet. Trade Kyle? They're wheeler-dealers. Got Gruden, traded Gruden, Got Gruden back, canned Gruden ... I'd trade for some draft picks.
That said, Rams won the Eddie DeBartolo way. Loads of talent.

(31,807 posts)Compton (that 49ers rookie you mentioned) did a good job pass protecting in early January. If you had bothered to read my post, you'd see that L.A. rushed as many as six defensive linemen and mixed in blitzes by safeties/corners. No one could pass protect with consistency with that pressure.
One thing about Shanahan -- you're 100% right in detecting that pattern of blowing big games. He's becoming the Marty Schottenheimer of his era.

(13,964 posts)That was part of stopping the running game. Who didn't see this coming from 400 miles away? The answer was inadequate, whether through scheming or player limitations.
Kudos to Jimmy for all he did this season. And to Ambry Thomas (the rookie I was thinking of) and all the others.
I am just not into details. I've got a lot of other things to process.
