Forty-five percent of Republicans believe the NFL provides too much support for its Black players, who make up nearly 70% of the league.
Thats according to a Los Angeles Times poll released Wednesday ahead of the Super Bowl that asked respondents to assess how much the NFL has done for Black players. Only 22% of all respondents said the league has done too much. And 57% of Democrats said the league hasnt done enough.
GOP members also took a much dimmer view of the leagues revamped hiring practices for coaching vacancies: 48% approved of the Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview minority candidates from the outside for head coaching positions and coordinator jobs.
Even with the rule in place, Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers was the only Black head coach among the leagues 32 teams until this week, when the Houston Texans hired Lovie Smith and the Miami Dolphins hired Mike McDaniel, who is biracial.

(57,653 posts)It's now the top draw/sport in the nation where as it used to be baseball. College football was next with boxing and horse racing following. Basket Ball has also come to the fore and also leapfrogged baseball.
And pro basket ball is dominated even more by Black players.
Without the players, increasingly more and more African American, pro football would still be behind other sports so the know-nothings who are complaining should STFU and enjoy the Super Bowl on Sunday and watch the highly skilled athletes do their thing. And the athletes, btw, are highly paid because they are one-in-10,000 cream of the crop athletes from ranks of high school and college players good enough to make it to the pros.
They've done as much for the NFL as the league has done for them. And it stands to reason that those who have played the game know how to teach it best, so there should of course be more Black coaches.

(26,730 posts)Speaking as a white person, I'm horrified. I'm at least somewhat aware of the ongoing and consistent racism in the NFL (all sports, I'm sure) and those Republicans are wrong.
Make them live one year as a black person. If they can, live one year as an NFL player. Then tell us the NFL does too much.
I just got Black Like Me from the library, which i originally read in something like 1964. I'm looking forward to reading it again.
The one thing I know as a white person is that I have essentially no clue what it is like to be black. And that's despite having a few African American friends over the years. Not enough, I know.
