NFL teams have submitted two separate proposals to adjust overtime, the league announced Wednesday, following months of discussion about the advantage of winning the opening possession.

The Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles have proposed that both teams be allowed at least one possession in overtime. The Tennessee Titans' proposal calls for both teams to get at least one possession unless the team that opens overtime with the ball scores a touchdown and then converts a two-point attempt.

The league's existing overtime rule, last updated in 2017, calls for both teams to get at least one possession unless the team that opens overtime with the ball scores a touchdown. The competition committee will decide next week whether to make any suggestions of its own, endorse a club proposal or recommend no changes.

Sounds fair to me, though if overtime was eliminated completely teams would be less likely run conservative plays in the 4th quarter. Play the 4th quarter to win, not tie.

Extending game time also increases the likelihood players get injured, short-term and long-term (like CTE).

3. Carry over the down and distance at the end of REG, swap end zones and play until someone scores.

This maintains the rhythm and character of that particular game.

Regular season games end in a tie if no one scores in the 5th quarter.
Playoff games play as many sudden death quarters as necessary.
