RB Frank Gore says he plans to sign one-day contract with 49ers to retire with team

"We're still trying to figure out when I'm going to do my one-day contract. To sign, do my retirement," Gore said on the SFNiners YouTube channel. He offered a timeline of a "couple months" for it to take place.

Gore, 38, said he hopes to work in the Niners' front office.

"I love looking at talent. I love evaluating talent and I love ball," Gore said. "And they [the 49ers] know that I know football players, what it's supposed to take to be a football player."

Gore was a third-round pick of the 49ers out of Miami in the 2005 draft. He played the first 10 years of his career in San Francisco before stops in Indianapolis, Miami, Buffalo and with the Jets. He did not play for a team last season.

I've seen some people dismiss Gore's career yardage as a product of career length, but that isn't quite fair. Those same people aren't equally dismissive of Emmitt Smith or Jerome Bettis.

Looking at a list of the top 20 rushers all time, Gore's yards per carry is 4.3, the same as Tomlinson, Dorsett, Faulk, and Dillon -- ahead of Smith, Martin, Bettis, James, Allen, Harris, Thomas, Jackson, and Riggins, but behind Payton, Sanders, Peterson, Dickerson, Brown, and Taylor. Only six of the other 20 leading rushers have a superior YPC.

4. His early 49ers teams, with Alex Smith at QB, were not good. One player made the difference though:

Guard Larry Allen. In 2006 he helped block for RB Frank Gore's franchise record 1,695 rushing yards. In 2007 Allen started all 16 games.

I think those poor teams lead to a lot of the dismissal you cite.
