Bethesda confirms Skyrim Special Edition and PC gamers may get it for free

Last week it was rumored that one of Bethesda’s big E3 reveals would be a remastered version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for current gen consoles and PC. It turns out the rumor was true, and Bethesda has named the new version Skyrim Special Edition.

This new version will be making its way on to PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 28 and includes all of the content from the original release and DLC packs. The main upgrade is to the graphics, which have been overhauled using graphical effects the latest consoles can handle. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Skyrim Special Edition includes “volumetric god rays” among many other enhancements.

Players of the original will also be pleased to hear Bethesda is including mod support on consoles and will cherry pick the best ones for release. I’m also quite certain those of you who prefer Sony consoles won’t be disappointed like you were on PS3 where Skyrim was an unplayable mess of a release.

...

Bethesda has stated that any PC gamer who owns Skyrim and all its DLC on Steam, or who purchased the Legendary Edition of the game, will be entitled to a copy of Skyrim Special Edition for free.

For anyone who likes modding Skyrim, the port to Xbox One and PS4 means the PC version will also likely be upgraded to a 64-bit program, eliminating the obnoxious 3.1 GB memory cap.
