Carrying Fire Extinguishers while riding

Thought I'd bring the point up in this forum.

Owner of a very nice Norton just suffered an engine fire and there have been some discussions about the issue over at www.accessnorton.com.

Would like to get some input over here.

1. That burnt Norton is a gem

Just the sort of project bike that would "make my winter".

It is a good reminder not to try to start an old English motorcycle in the garage. Not the kind of motorcycle with carburetor "tickle valves" that drip gas all over the place. My old Triumph had to "drool" a lot of gas to start on a cold day.

2. I'm behind on my project bike

Finally got it to primer though.

The extinguisher thing got me to thinking about how one might mount an extinguisher on a bike for emergency use.

3. Generally a bad idea.

Few people read the directions on how to use a fire extinguisher. They treat it like a point-and-shoot camera and make the situation worse.

The heavy truck D.O.T. safety course I took referred to the fire extinguishers that truckers are required to carry on their trucks.

"Tell your drivers, if there is a fire, the fire extinguisher is for the fire department to use. Tell them, if there is a fire, WALK AWAY FROM THE TRUCK AND CALL 911."

4. Seriously bad idea

Carrying a highly pressurized container which could easily be damaged in a crash causing its own set of problems is not a good thing to do.

5. We have mandatory inservices on extinguishers every year.

I carry on in my Jeep on trail rides but I'd find it hard to carry a typical compact one like I have for the jeep on my dirtbike.

6. Dirt rider here, I used to pack a folding trowel (in part) as a fire tool.

Never had to use it in that capacity, but the idea was met with many nods of approval.
