(62,514 posts)According to this D3 is half the travel time of D4: http://soccer.si.com/2013/12/03/travel-considerations-world-cup/
The US does sort of benefit as well, but not with nearly the advantage as England. Since Ghana is in G3 the US will be able to use its "experience" with long travel time and adapt while Ghana will be experiencing it for the first time, so that gives us hope we can get rid of the bad Ghana luck.

(11,138 posts)If the USMNT wants to earn the world's respect they need to feel like they can beat teams like these. Germany obviously is a dominating squad right now but why do they need to fear Portugal? Portugal should fear US, not the other way round. Furthermore Ghana has beaten us twice now, but if we are confident we should WANT the chance to show we are better than they are. If you can't beat Ghana you don't deserve to advance anyway.
It's time to get busy.

Then I was all:
We can do this. We're due for a win against Ghana. We have our best team ever and they're not what they were three years ago. Portugal are damn near a one man show. Sure, that one man is the best player in the world right now, but we match up very well (and are flat out better at the goalkeeper position, all the way down the depth chart). Germany may not need the game agaisnt us (we play them last), so at least a point isn't completely unrealistic.

(21,584 posts)these will be good games.
Maybe being in a tough group will take off the pressure of expecting to advance and lossen the team up to pull off a win or two. I could just imagine the world's collective shock of US/Klinsman downing Germany...

(488 posts)Jogi Loew isn't my favorite coach of all time, but he's light years ahead of Klinsman. Germany play the possession game to an extreme and have so much quality all over the pitch that I just don't see them having any trouble with the USA team. Could see 2x 5:0 results for the Germans to be honest.
But then again, I have die mannschaft going undefeated in the group and winning the whole tournament...
