congrats to to the England ladies

After a heartbreaking semi loss to Japan they left it all on the pitch to win in overtime in the bronze medal game.

As an Englishman watching the last few minutes of overtime as the German women's team threw everything they had at England I was very nervous it would go to penalty kicks.

I literally broke into tears when the final whistle blew.

After 18 losses and two draws to Germany the English women's team broke the string and did it with stamina, guts, courage, determination and flair.

Thankyou ladies for reminding me why I so love this game...

It seemed to further rattle Germany, who couldn't find the back of the net despite way more shots on goal than England.

As a Brit guy I know said after the win, "our lasses have more bullocks than our men." I think he meant it as a compliment...

We Englishmen have even been known to comment that the USA men's team plays with more bollocks then our men's team right now!

They've done an enormous amount to get women's football on the map in this country with their achievements in this world cup.

After that heartbreaking (and unlucky) loss to Japan. To pick themselves up and beat the number one ranked team in the world, a team they had never beaten. Amazing. I'm so impressed with their coach. So impressed with the entire team. Especially impressed with the wonderful outpouring of good will for this team, for exemplifying the best of competition, and leaving it all on the pitch.

"....But Williams’ life is far more raw and real than mere sport. She was homeless for seven years, playing for England while reeling from one anonymous hostel to another in London. Her two worlds were kept separate and only a few people knew that an England footballer lived on the street."

snip

"....Williams hid her homelessness from her friends in football and the truth only emerged when Hope Powell, who would coach her for years in the national team, recognised the teenager’s problems soon after she had left home. “We had an England Under-19 get together and I was hovering around at the end of the trip. I’d just spent a week in the team hotel and Hope said: ‘Where are you going?’ I said: ‘I don’t know.’"

Fara Williams -

By the way, what do they mean in the article where they say Fara Williams is the most capped player on the team? Or that she received so many caps?
