Juneau agrees deal with industry body to curtail visits but critics say it does not go far enough to protect quality of life

Alaska’s capital city is to limit the numbers of cruise ship passengers arriving at the port amid concerns over tourism’s growing impact, but a leading critic of the industry has said further measures to protect Alaskans’ quality of life are needed.

Located on the Gastineau Channel in southern Alaska, Juneau has a population of 32,000 and last year received a record 1.65 million cruise ship passengers – a 23% increase from the previous high.

While many businesses encourage the bonanza of tourist dollars, other people are bothered by buzzing helicopters, crowded streets and hiking trails, and damage to the local environment.

Seeking to balance the economic benefits against the effects of high numbers of visitors, the city reached an agreement last week with the Cruise Lines International Association in Alaska that will limit daily cruise passenger arrivals to 16,000 from Sundays to Fridays and to 12,000 on Saturdays.

Becoming a trend and for good reason. Tourism is out of control and becoming a devastating factor to the places tourists like to go visit.

2. We were cruisers at the beginning

of the current popularity of cruising. Over the years, the ports became awful places to visit. Overcrowding, shops everywhere selling dubious quality precious metals and jewels and grifters trying to bilk the tourists. By the end, we wouldn't even get off the ship. Exotic ports became USA style mini-malls. And for visitors from other venues, their enjoyment of a place was ruined by the masses of people charging into a place. One visit to Venice was damaged by these masses of day tripping cruise passengers. Good for Juneau! Some regulation is needed.

3. We found Atlas. It nothing like what you experienced. It takes you to lovely ports.

It is a European company. We had a mix of American and European travelers. It was relaxing, informative and with great food and wine. And for me, an art historian, it was particularly excellent. I recommend it to you for your next cruise.
