Related: About this forumIn a show of contrition, Catholic dioceses begin long road of healing
From the article:
His gesture said it all.
Standing in front of the altar Tuesday (Sept. 25) in Raleighs Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral, Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama took his violet zucchetto from his head and fell to his knees.
Id like all you who have been abused, who have been victims of this horrible crime, in the name of the church, I ask for forgiveness, he said.
For the next 20 minutes, as he delivered his homily without notes in his heavily accented English he is Colombian Zarama was on his knees.

If it is to be more than just a public show, the RCC must do far more. This is a step, but it is just a first step on the long road to change.

(5,170 posts)This isn't even a fraction of a step. Priests have to say mass every day.
PAY THEM THE FUCKING MONEY YOU ASSHOLES. AND ACTUALLY FIRE SOME PEOPLE.
Until something real actually happens, it's just more smoke and mirrors. We know that historically.
guillaumeb
(42,649 posts)As I noted.
Cuthbert Allgood
(5,170 posts)Which he has to do everyday.
Yeah, yeah, he fell to his knees and said he was really sorry.
That and $3 will get you coffee at Starbucks.
guillaumeb
(42,649 posts)Perhaps the RCC will make the changes needed.
Cuthbert Allgood
(5,170 posts)Based on the history of what the RCC has actually done when they have been "sorry," we will see fuck all from this.

(49,533 posts)How many centuries has this been going on?
How much slack does the RCC get?
CHANGE. NOW. Not in a fucking YEAR.
guillaumeb
(42,649 posts)Eliminate racial animus now. Not in a year.
trotsky
(49,533 posts)One that is headed by a single individual who can order changes to occur?
Nope. So your ridiculous false equivalence can be tossed right out.
The RCC *can* make instant changes to virtually eliminate their sex abuse problems. Why don't they?

(49,533 posts)Typical.

(15,131 posts)It all has to be carefully scripted, you see.

(49,533 posts)The RCC has played that game for a long time. Hiring a former FOX News consultant as their PR guy has helped them ramp it up, definitely.

Words are wind. Shit or get off the pot.

(4,736 posts)Hail Marys and Novenas are not going to un-rape children. Clergymen can throw themselves down wailing before an altar with torn vestments or whatever, it is not enough. Real-world consequences for child rape need to apply.

The RCC is a global criminal cartel.

(42,649 posts)Zarama and his entourage of priests wore purple vestments, the color of penitence, typically worn during Lenten season.
Why no mention of the purple vestments? Or the symbolism of the color?

Mariana
(15,131 posts)That's what the article says. Is it really important what costumes they wore?
guillaumeb
(42,649 posts)Agreed?

The actions taken consisted of writing a script (carefully!) and putting on a show.
MineralMan
(147,606 posts)They had a ceremony. That ceremony does nothing whatever to redress the harm done to victims over years, decades and centuries. Not a damned thing.
Future actions have not taken place. Come back and tell us about those at some later time.

MineralMan
(147,606 posts)That, I believe is the problem. If everything is simply derivative of the thoughts of others, you understand nothing, really. You are merely repeating what you have heard or read.

(36,900 posts)Apologizing for the RCC seems to require a lot of effort, and is so noted.

(42,649 posts)As is your ability to mis-frame or misunderstand any argument that does not fit your preferred narrative.

(36,900 posts)Here I was thinking it was because you had nothing of substance to offer, yet still couldn't resist the burning desire to reply.
Either way it's still worth pulling the chain for the inevitable predictable response.
guillaumeb
(42,649 posts)And further proof, as if it were needed, of the validity of my 11th Commandment observation. So many of the choir seem compelled to respond even when the responses are clearly whataboutism fallacies designed to divert and distract. And yet the same few keep responding in that way.
And then they complain that there is no dialogue.
Major Nikon
(36,900 posts)Combined with, 'I know you are but what am I' and some 11th commandment argle bargle thrown in for good measure all in one post.
You are truly setting new standards for banality, so bravo on that one.
