The lobbying arm of the Catholic Church in Pennsylvania on Wednesday accused a clergy sex abuse survivor of trolling it on social media — then apologized after a swift backlash.

The unusual exchange, since deleted, unfolded on the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference’s Facebook page. It began Tuesday evening, when the conference posted an update celebrating House passage of a bill restricting abortion.

In the comments, clergy abuse survivor Carolyn Fortney switched the subject, imploring the legislature to take up an emotionally charged bill that would allow some victims of decades-old sexual abuse to sue. She and other victims have pushed for the change since the release last summer of a grand jury report documenting child sexual abuse and its cover-up by some in the Catholic Church.

That a spokesperson anonymously attacked one of the victims of this horror makes that clear.

Disband the Roman Catholic Church and divide its wealth among its victims. That is the solution.

I do not believe any other action will cure the metastatic spread of the evil it has done.

There are so many institutions that should be broken up. I'm old enough to remember back in the 80's when AT&T was broken up. We had a completely different GOP then. They hadn't been overtaken by the Reagan revolution of congressMEN. There were reasonable GOP Senators and Representatives back then.

Unfortunately, the Reagan era ushered in Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham and so many others of their ilk. It ushered in the Gordon Gekko philosophy of capitalism.

It will be generations again now before the pendulum swings back to some degree of sanity.

I got to this post from the Latest Threads tab. I did not realize I was in the Religion group. Thanks for the notification. In the future I will strive to be more aware of where I'm posting and not just reflexively post.

It was only my intention to draw the comparison between so many monolithic institutions in this current world and the difficulty of breaking them up. It was not my intention to change the topic.

6. Well, the RCC is already morally bankrupt, so let's make it

financially bankrupt, as well.

I have been in the residences of a couple of RCC Bishops. They lived in luxury. I think that's probably the norm. I would direct their attention to some passages in the book of Matthew that speak of wealth and luxury, and the impediments they create.

The RCC lost its way centuries ago. In its quest for political power and wealth, it belies its supposed belief in the recorded words of the supposed Christ.

And now, we see that it has a long history of its priests doing great sexual harm to children. There is a part of Matthew that addresses that as well. Something about millstones around necks, as I recall.

In my opinion, it is time for every Catholic parishioner to walk away from the doors of RCC churches and cathedrals and seek Christian guidance elsewhere if they need it. Many have already done so.

12. That's a heap of bullshit

As a now tombstoned carpet used to like to remind us, Catholic Charities are incorporated as separate entities from dioceses. Bankruptcy of a diocese does not affect the other entity as virtually no moneys are connected between the two at the organizational level. The RCC and many of the dioceses have taken additional steps to protect their capital assets from victims’ lawsuits.
