Experimental stem cell therapy helps paralyzed man regain use of arms and hands
The 21-year-old who suffered a cervical spine injury in March gains significant improvement in his motor function at Keck Hospital of USC.
BY Meg Aldrich, September 9, 2016
On March 6, just shy of his 21st birthday, Kristopher (Kris) Boesen of Bakersfield suffered a traumatic injury to his cervical spine when his car fishtailed on a wet road, hit a tree and slammed into a telephone pole.
His parents were warned there was a good chance their son would be permanently paralyzed from the neck down. However, they also learned that he could possibly qualify for a clinical study that might help.
Enter Keck Medical Center of USC, which announced that a team of doctors became the first in California to inject its patient with an experimental treatment made from stem cells as part of a multi-center clinical trial.
Charles Liu, director of the USC Neurorestoration Center, led the surgical team, working in collaboration with the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center and Keck Medicine of USC, that injected an experimental dose of 10 million AST-OPC1 cells directly into Boesens cervical spinal cord in early April.
For reference:
https://blog.cirm.ca.gov/tag/ast-opc1/
AST-OPC1 cells are oligodendrocyte progenitor cells derived from embryonic stem cells. These are cells located in the brain and spinal cord that develop into support cells that help nerve cells function and communicate with each other.
And in case anyone forgot:
Stem cell controversy

Points of controversy
Much of the criticism has been a result of religious beliefs, and in the most high-profile case, US President George W Bush signed an executive order banning the use of federal funding for any cell lines other than those already in existence, stating at the time, "My position on these issues is shaped by deeply held beliefs," and "I also believe human life is a sacred gift from our creator."
So when you wonder why your 'deeply held beliefs' (that do not comport with reality) are dismissed with severe prejudice and as mere 'magical thinking', just ask the former quadriplegic guy who can now move his arms. Ask him why all those 'thoughts and prayers' didn't work for him.

(63,221 posts)If any of these religious hypocrites were paralyzed or their children were paralyzed, they wouldn't stop to think for a minute before making use of this technology for themselves - just like they do with abortion.
But when they think it only applies to OTHER people, their self-righteous, sanctimonious side comes out and they condemn it because of the "sanctity of fetal life" or some such bullshit.

(42,649 posts)Accepted.
For my part, I use science and faith to answer different questions.

At least the non-science part keeps getting easier and easier, since it keeps getting smaller and smaller.
Pretty soon it can sit all nice and cute on a shelf, just like that elf.

(34,810 posts)all those whose religion makes them stop this type of research don't count?
Because you are good with Stem Cell Research, the Rights defunding of it on religious grounds is of no importance to you.
Because apparently there is no conflict between religion and science as long as you personally don't see one.

(42,649 posts)I do not choose for others. Nor do I see any conflict between faith and science.

(34,810 posts)ignoring the many religious people who constantly are in conflict with science. And who force their beliefs on the rest of us.
But like I said, it doesn't bother you as long as you thing there is no conflict.

(36,900 posts)Meanwhile funding for stem cell research is suppressed in this country while China takes the lead. It takes a lot of "faith" to delude oneself into believing religion isn't responsible. When a religionist does something bad, that's just "human nature". When a religionist does something good, thanks religion!
The real miracle is anyone in this country deriving any benefit in this country from stem cell therapies with a highly organized network of zealots working hard to keep it from happening.
