Philly-Based Bible Printer Will Close and Lay Off 174 Due to Decreased Demand
By Hemant Mehta, November 3, 2019
A Philadelphia-based printing company says it will lay off 174 workers and shut down the facility all because, after printing more than a billion bibles over the past century, their product just isnt in demand anymore. They say the Bible business has really gone soft, and their warehouses are full, said Wayne Cox, business representative for Graphic Communications Conference-Teamsters local union 4-C, based in Clifton Heights, which represents 150 of the workers, along with printers at other companies in central Pennsylvania. [LSC Communications] didnt reply to an inquiry seeking comment.
When Cox began working there more than four decades ago, it seemed like a secure job since the Bible is always a best-seller. Maybe it was until the internet came along. But this isnt just about the decline of printed media. With shifting religious demographics, its not like people are eager to pick up a Bible, whether its at home or in a hotel room.

(7,533 posts)I was in the printing business. Computers and the internet killed it. People can now print their own. Companies go online and stop printing catalogs.
Same with the Bible. A day doesn't go by without me seeing an ad for an online Bible.

(147,606 posts)China prints lots and lots of books. They're pretty good at it, and were the first culture to print books in the first place.
They might as well print Bibles, too, although that might conflict with their atheism. I don't know. There's a rationalization for everything, I suppose.

Others, instead of amassing translations and commentaries go to Biblehub or Biblegateway.
Heck, I found it easier to use the online sites than turn around and reach to the bookcase behind me for my Hebrew copy of the Torah, Greek NT, or some alternative translation that I acquired years ago.
