W.Va. church may be only one to use robocalls for evangelism

HURRICANE, W.Va. — The telltale pause after you answer the phone usually means you’re about to hear a fuzzy, prerecorded message offering unbeatable deals on satellite TV or trumpeting the virtues of a political candidate.

But for about 800 people every day in West Virginia, the message — delivered in a warm, friendly voice — offers a different deal: salvation.

“We want to tell you how you can have heaven and know it, and cause true revival in America,” the voice says.

The 90-second message gives Bible quotes and an invitation to pray, and concludes: “God bless you is my prayer.” You can also leave a message after the beep.

Just got this call. I have to believe they got my number from one of the Republican lists I appear to be on.

2. The Jehova's Witnesses just mailed me a full page, handwritten letter & a business card!

Since they can’t go door to door, they’re handwriting letters and mailing them. That’s good for the USPS and good for me! The post office sells stamps and I don’t have to speak with Jehova’s Witnesses!

They got my name from the property records. I know this because the mortgage and deed have my former married name as my last name.

They do have good handwriting. I won’t be contacting them, however, since I am an atheist.
