Related: About this forumGrowing number of Southern Baptist women question roles
For years some conservative pastors in the Southern Baptist Convention have directed criticism at popular Bible teacher Beth Moore, the denomination's best-known womanEmily Snook is the daughter of a Southern Baptist pastor. She met her husband, also a pastor, while they attended a Southern Baptist university
Yet the 39-year-old Oklahoma woman now finds herself wondering if its time to leave the nation's largest Protestant denomination, in part because of practices and attitudes that limit womens roles.
Every day I ask that, Snook said. I dont know what the right answer is.
Shes not alone. Among the millions of women belonging to churches of the Southern Baptist Convention, there are many who have questioned the faiths gender-role doctrine and more recently urged a stronger response to disclosures of sexual abuse perpetrated by SBC clergy.
For many SBC women, even those committed to staying, the topic of gender became more volatile this month when popular Bible teacher Beth Moore said she no longer considered herself Southern Baptist. Moore, perhaps the best-known evangelical woman in the world, had drawn the ire of some SBC conservatives for speaking out against Donald Trump in 2016 and suggesting the denomination had problems with sexism.

(7,171 posts)4. Not a Traditional Religious Issue
All women, Southern Baptist women included, have been forced into the workplace since the 70s by increasingly burdening economic conditions. No longer is the traditional family setup widespread, most women work outside the home as an equal partner just to pay the bills.
Some Southern Baptist women recognize this and should be commended for rebelling against outdated gender roles from a tainted version of Christianity. Those roles favored by male leaders are not for religious purposes, but exist for the domination of women and maintaining power.
