Religious 'Nones' are now the largest single group in the U.S.

When Americans are asked to check a box indicating their religious affiliation, 28% now check 'none.'

A new study from Pew Research finds that the religiously unaffiliated – a group comprised of atheists, agnostic and those who say their religion is "nothing in particular" – is now the largest cohort in the U.S. They're more prevalent among American adults than Catholics (23%) or evangelical Protestants (24%).

Back in 2007, Nones made up just 16% of Americans, but Pew's new survey of more than 3,300 U.S. adults shows that number has now risen dramatically.

Researchers refer to this group as the "Nones."

There are vast chasms between the various Christian sects. For example, some Evangelicals don’t recognize Catholics as true Christians. Would it be logical to combine those two into one group? That doesn’t make any sense to me.

Using a broad stroke, this study shows that Americans who aren’t among the “faithful” are a large and growing percentage of our country. Given many of the Christian Right’s policies and goals, this is a good trend.

About 30 years ago, an Assembly of God minister told me, in so many words, that Catholics were not Christians.

agnostic, atheist, or merely adamantly refused to answer to their religiosity/spirituality, but instead citing it as a matter they prefer to be private.

I suspect more and more “nones” will appear as more and more are disgusted with their fruit.
