Hell may have frozen over!
The Pope called on Mary today.
VATICAN CITY, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Pope Benedict XVI paid the traditional New Year's homage to the Virgin Mary Sunday at a public mass at St. Peter's Basilica.
Benedict called Mary "mediator of God's blessing for the world," a role the Roman Catholic Church has since assumed.
"The Church also participates in the mystery of divine motherhood, through preaching, which sows the seed of the Gospel throughout the world, and through the sacraments, which communicate grace and divine life to men," the pontiff told the crowd.

For centuries the church has relegated Mary to being a mere vessel...now She's the mediator...perhaps in a short time She will be known as God/dess and the giver of all blessings.
Here's to that day soon.

(75,480 posts)college. Believe me Mary was almost worshipped as much as JC. Maybe it's because I was taught by nuns, who were women, that Mary was such an important entity in our prayer schedule. We said the Hail Mary various times a day, prayed the rosary and were always directed to light candles, say novenas and other such religious practices to the Virgin Mary. It was like Jesus and God the Father weren't that important for praying to. Sure, we were taught that because Mary was the mother of Jesus, we had a better chance of our prayers being heard if she put a word in for us with her Son. So I think the mediator role has been there all along.

(22,031 posts)I was also raised Catholic and went to a Catholic school. At home, we prayed the rosary, which by the way, consists mostly of repetitions of the Hail Mary.
Also, there are many appearance by Mary, like Lourdes. Many miracles are ascribed to her. I never thought of her as a passive vessel. She seemed quite active.

(3,747 posts)makes your knowledge more experiential than mine. I was just thinking the history thing where Paul started hating on women and then the dark times and then the idea was pushed along during the age of "reason".
I went to an Episcopal church and although I don't think anyone said, I just thought "God/Jesus" was too busy and Mary was like Mom talking to Dad after we went to bed! Oh my, childish thoughts can shape a life
We also got "holy ghost", not so much Mary. We sang Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Although when going to confession, the punishment was always a bunch of "Hail Marys" to recite just like she would intercede for me like a mom.
No wonder they're losing followers, it's all such a merry go round of silliness so someone can come out on top of everyone else.
Anyway, I would love it if they just admitted Mother Earth has the power to heal, to give birth, to destroy and that Her Livingness is what sustains us all.
Happy New Year...WooHoo 2012

O, yes, they said this would happen!
